Procedures

The first step is to prepare the surface for painting.

For walls, this means fixing any holes, cracks, or peeling paint. Penetration primer should be used on porous surfaces. This is not needed for drywall, or walls which have been previously painted unless they are very old and dry.

For trim, it is good to lightly sand (scuff) the area before painting to ensure proper adhesion of the new paint.

Floors and furniture are always protected with coverings to keep clean from any paint drips.

Procedures

The most important part of the job is the preparation of the substrate. This includes:

Washing to remove any dirt, pollen or mildew
Scraping off loose and peeling paint or crumbling substrate
Patching and repairing any holes are other worn spots
Wood surfaces: sanding of area after scraping to remove old wood fibers
Priming bare area after repair, especially important for wood
Caulking around frames of windows and doors
Cleaning of work area daily

Once the surface is ready for painting, painting work should be done working systematically around the building. We always use top quality paint designed for the substrate being painted. This will give you the longest lasting protection and beautiful finish.

Special care is always taken for bushes and landscaping.

Typically price will include material for the agreed upon work, but a price for labor only is also possible if you already have the paint.

We had a new kitchen installed, and hired Tom to do the painting. We weren't sure what to do with the backsplash which the installers left very uneven after putting in the outlets. Instead of using a composite backsplash which was expensive and can scratch over time, we took his suggestion of painting with a washable paint.

He did a special texture first using compound, and then finished with washable paint. I've already washed it several times and it's perfect, I never knew paint could be so durable. And if I want in the future I can easily change the color - which I might do since we went with my husband's choice and it's nice but not exactly what I wanted 🙂
